Conversations on the Future of Replication (1-day Workshop)

Categories: News, Research

Replication research has grown rapidly in recent years, but the community working on these questions remains relatively dispersed across fields. Researchers often face similar conceptual and practical challenges, yet opportunities to discuss these issues together are still limited.

Let’s try something new!

On July 18th, the Institute for Replication will host a one-day workshop in Barcelona (our home for the summer), bringing together researchers interested in reproductions and replications across the social sciences and public health. The goal of the workshop is simple: create space for discussion, idea generation, and reflection on the evolving role of reproduction and replication.

The Barcelona workshop is designed to explore these questions in an informal, discussion-focused setting.

A Different Kind of Workshop
Unlike traditional academic conferences, this workshop will not revolve around long presentations or polished papers. Instead, the format emphasizes conversation. The day will begin with lightning talks. Participants will briefly introduce themselves, their research, and any ideas related to replication that they would like to share. The goal is simply to give everyone a quick sense of who is in the room and what perspectives they bring.

After that, the workshop will shift into a series of 30-minute discussion sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to propose a topic and guide a conversation around it. There is nothing to prepare: participants simply choose a topic they find interesting and facilitate an open discussion with the group.

Questions Worth Discussing
Participants choose the topics, but I guess the following topics will be discussed: Quality versus quantity of replications. How to scale up replication projects. How to better support replication efforts? The epistemology of replication. Incentives and credit. Funding models. Role of AI. And more (including topics that I cannot even think of right now)!

Interested in participating? Contact me (Abel Brodeur) over the next few weeks! We look forward to the discussions.
